About

Focused. Disciplined. Informed.

Scient Ventures is one of Canada's longest-standing seed stage venture capital firms. For nearly three decades, we have been identifying and backing the entrepreneurs whose technologies reshape how people live, work, and connect.

Founded in 1996, we began investing at a time when the venture landscape looked fundamentally different. That longevity is not incidental — it reflects a philosophy of patience, conviction, and compounding insight. Over the course of four funds and more than 100 investments, we have developed a pattern recognition engine refined by real outcomes: 40+ exits through IPO, acquisition, and strategic M&A across healthcare, education, fintech, and enterprise software.

We operate with a concentrated portfolio strategy, making fewer bets with deeper commitment. Every company in our portfolio receives hands-on engagement — not just capital, but operational guidance drawn from decades of navigating the full lifecycle of company building. From product-market fit through scaling, governance, and exit, our team has been in the room for every stage.

Our fourth fund is actively deploying into connected technologies, intelligent systems, and platforms that sit at the intersection of multiple industries. We look for founders with domain expertise, defensible technology, and the discipline to build lasting businesses — not just fast-growing ones.

Long-Term Partnership

We commit to founders for the full lifecycle of their companies — from first cheque through scaling, governance, and exit. Our average relationship spans 7+ years because building enduring companies takes enduring partners.

Operational Depth

With 100+ portfolio companies behind us, our guidance is grounded in real outcomes — not theory. We bring pattern recognition across hiring, go-to-market, pricing, and board strategy that only comes from decades in the arena.

North American Reach

Headquartered in Toronto with a portfolio spanning the continent's most dynamic technology corridors — from Waterloo to the Bay Area to New York. Our network connects founders to customers, talent, and capital across borders.

Philosophy

How we invest

"We invest to outperform over time. We do not try to outperform all of the time."

At Scient, we invest in exceptional early-stage companies with the intention of assisting in accelerated growth. We look for well-managed organizations that demonstrate enduring business models and leadership committed to long-term revenue and earnings expansion.

We view connected technology — from intelligent devices and cloud infrastructure to AI and embedded sensors — as a fundamental computing paradigm that is transforming every industry we touch.

What we look for

  • Technology-central experience

Connected technology must be central to the user experience and product innovation.

  • Technology-native business model

The business model must be fundamentally enabled by the technology, not merely enhanced by it.

  • Network effects

Portfolio companies should demonstrate or have clear potential for positive network effects.

  • Market transformation

The opportunity should transform incumbent industries or create entirely new markets.
